Come and have a go at orienteering at one of Moravian Orienteer’s Saturday League events. This is a fantastic outdoor activity that can be done with family and friends and will take you to some of Moray’s lovely forests and outdoor areas. You will be provided with help and advice to get you started and be able to have a go on a course specifically designed for beginners.
What clothing/kit to take? Orienteering kit comprises a lightweight top and leggings. As a newcomer, just be dressed ready for an outdoor activity prepared to run or walk as you choose. It is good to have shoes with some grip though trainers will be fine at first. As both of these events will be in woodland, full leg cover is compulsory. Please bring a compass if you have one. At the event, you will be able to hire or borrow the timing device to record your race.
Will I need to be accompanied? It depends on the experience of the orienteer and on parental permission. Newcomers to orienteering should undertake the course that has been designed for beginners (either white or yellow). These courses are usually short (up to 2.5Km in length) with checkpoints on paths or visible from the path. As a newcomer, these courses could be undertake alone, in pairs, with or without parental support. If parental support is considered appropriate (i.e. parental shadowing), we would recommend that it is provided to support the pupil in checking/making decisions rather than the parent making the decisions. This will allow the pupil to develop their skills and confidence in orienteering.
Is the course suitable for Wheelchairs? Yes for beginner courses only (which have checkpoints on paths/tracks), provided that the wheelchair is suitable for narrow tracks and uneven ground.
The cost £4.50 includes the hire of the timing unit/dibber. £1 discount for those who are Orienteering members or having your own dibber.
START – Details of event assembly and starts/finish will be provided via the www.mor.scot website nearer the time. The event on 19 February 2022 is likely to be based at Logie Steading, Dunphail, Forres, IV36 2QN,
